Each complex supports a pluggable media dependent adapter (MDA) that allows a common flexible fast path to support all of the possible interface types. processed. The IOM processes packets received from an MDA and sends cells to the switch fabric. Each flexible fast path connects into the core switch fabric. An IOM also contains a CPU section for managing the forwarding hardware in each flexible fast path as well as for participating in the distributed control plane used in the system.

The appropriate NP processes frames sent by the local processor before sending them to an MDA. On egress the MDA processes the packets coming from the Flexible Fast Path Complex and transmits them out the appropriate physical interface in the correct format.
